“Personally, I would rather my taxes were going towards a hot, filling, £2.10 lunch for every child and young person in the country than towards, say, single-use military equipment.”
Currently, in England, children in Reception, Year One and Year Two get a cooked lunch, for free, provided at school and paid for by the local authority. Which means paid for by people who pay taxes, as part of a widely recognised culture that we, the people, should feed the people. All of that is great.
I know a lot of teachers – they run in the family and there are a lot of them about. I, like many people, have heard horror stories about children eating pencils, paper, things out of bins because they haven’t had a decent breakfast and they are starving. Many of these teachers are now buying fruit, biscuits and bread out of their own salaries to have in their classrooms, to ensure that those students have at least eaten, that they aren’t so hungry that they cannot concentrate on learning.
The solution – as I see it – is simple. We make school meals free for all. Everyone. Once free school meals become universally available, we can get rid of the stigma. Parents and carers can demand better-quality ingredients because the price isn’t being passed on to individual families. It will be harder for poor providers to get away with serving poor-quality food because we’re all eating it. And there could always be the option of packed lunches for people who want different meals.
