A dud debut from Frankie Montas and more shoddy work out of the bullpen by Albert Abreu, Jonathan Loaisiga and Scott Effross cost the Yankees.
ST. LOUIS — The Yankees had their new stud pitcher on the mound, looking to stop a four-game losing streak. Their offense, even without Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton, scored plenty of runs.
“We’ve talked a lot this year about winning games in so many different ways,” manager Aaron Boone said before the game. “We’ve lost some of those games we were winning all the time earlier.” But Montas’ subpar debut continued in the bottom of the second with back-to-back walks to Paul DeJong and Yadier Molina. After he struck out Tommy Edman, Montas allowed a booming double to right-center by Dylan Carlson that drove in DeJong.
Montas, on a pitch count in his third start since suffering shoulder inflammation and receiving a cortisone injection, was at 53 pitches through two innings.
