But if Macron’s government loses the support of the conservative Republicans party and passes the reform without the support of a parliamentary majority, it would raise a “fundamental and existential question for him about whether he seeks an early election to win a mandate that actually allows him to govern effectively,” said Rahman.
Those sentiments could re-energize the left-wing parliamentary alliance around Macron opponent Jean-Luc Mélenchon, which was formed last year but has so far lacked common ground, said Bruno Cautrès, a researcher at Sciences Po in Paris. “It clearly creates a unifying topic,” he said.
