Texas GOP rift widens amid a special session, as an alleged meeting with a white supremacist sparks feud between Speaker Phelan and Lt. Gov. Patrick.
As the third special session for the Texas legislature began, much of the legislature's focus was turned not to school choice or border security policy but to an alleged meeting between prominent Texas conservatives and a white supremacist. Shortly after, Patrick, who presides over the Senate, issued a statement directly condemning Phelan's remarks and calling on him to resign. Phelan ultimately did not resign before the House of Representatives gaveled in for the start of session and indicated he does not intend to do so while speaking with reporters. Asked about Patrick's call for his resignation, Phelan joked, "It must be Monday, another call for my resignation from the Lieutenant Governor."
A majority of Texas House Republicans publicly backed Phelan's remarks, including his call to give donations from Defend Texas Liberty to charitable organizations, in an open letter.
