Fracking ban to be lifted by Government
The UK Government has confirmed it has lifted the ban on fracking - arguing the decision has been made due to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
“To get there we will need to explore all avenues available to us through solar, wind, oil and gas production – so it’s right that we’ve lifted the pause to realise any potential sources of domestic gas.”The Government also announced a new oil and gas licensing round. This is expected to be launched by the North Sea Transition Authority in early October.
The government has previously applied a “seismic threshold” for what it considered acceptable. However in 2019 Cuadrilla caused a magnitude 2.9 earthquake at its site Preston New Road site near Blackpool leading to a ban and rules for fracking to be halted if a tremor measuring 0.5 magnitude or above is caused.
The Government also published the British Geological Survey’s scientific review into shale gas extraction, which was commissioned earlier this year. BEIS said the review “recognised that we have limited current understanding of UK geology and onshore shale resources, and the challenges of modelling geological activity in relatively complex geology sometimes found in UK shale locations”.
