In the last decade or so, the idea of digital leadership – what it means, what it entails, and what it looks like – has changed drastically,. Ten to 15 years ago, an individual in a role focused on digital leadership within a company, whatever that role was officially called, was focused on providing and administering the information technology, systems, networks, and connectivity an enterprise needed to do its job.
To be at full digital maturity, a company must successfully wield four strategies, each with varying primacy based on that company’s size, focus, and needs – and, likely, with a different person or team in charge of each. That level of enterprise maturity is defined not only by the strength of each of these individual strategies, but also by the efficacy with which a company juggles and reconciles its sometimes competing demands.
There are as many diverse models of mature holistic digital strategies as there are industries looking to produce different outcomes. For retailers, a digital engagement strategy might be the most important component. In an IT company, the focus might be on security. In medical and pharmaceutical fields, it is all about data, including data privacy and security. And in engineering firms, the imperative may be digital solutions that sell or diversify their business.
