Brendan O'Hara, who recently became the party's foreign affairs spokesperson, will have to see off Helensburgh councillor Math Campbell-Sturgess to be successful.
O'Hara currently represents Argyll and Bute, but the pair will compete for the new Argyll, Bute and Lochaber South constituency.Campbell-Sturgess has been a councillor in Helensburgh and Lomond South since 2022.Campbell-Sturgess was also previously a councillor in Inverclyde between 2012 and 2017.
O'Hara became SNP Westminster chief whip in January after Martin Docherty-Hughes resigned from the role. O'Hara told the Helensburgh Advertiser: "I can confirm that I will be seeking the nomination to be the SNP’s candidate for the new seat of Argyll, Bute and South Lochaber at the forthcoming General Election.
"As a democratic party, quite rightly, my re-selection is not a foregone conclusion and others may wish to put themselves forward for nomination as well.
