Douglas Chapman quit as SNP party treasurer in 2021 after just six months in the job.
A former SNP treasurer said he had "no choice" but to resign after he attempted to make the party's accounts "more accessible to the membership".
Chapman resigned as treasurer in May 2021 and cops took the decision to launch Operation Branchform the following month. "My role as treasurer really was, I went in with the ambition of making the accounts much more accessible to the membership. And unfortunately the way things worked out, I wasn’t really allowed to do that, which was a great disappointment.
Chapman insisted it was not "unusual" for political parties to be in a deficit, adding: "Obviously it's not ideal being in a deficit, but it's not an unusual position for political parties to be in.”
