John Gregory, one of only four people to coach the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a Grey Cup championship, has died after a short illness. He was 84.

Photo by Patrick PettitGregory had spent four seasons as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ line coach before being hired by Bill Baker, who had just taken over as the Roughriders’ general manager after a front-office housecleaning.

“My parents were very poor, so I never even got to go to a football game until I was in about the sixth or seventh grade,” Gregory recalled in a 2009 interview with the Next stop: The University of Northern Iowa, where he excelled at outside linebacker despite being an undersized 170 pounds. Along the way, he received a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

Over 10 seasons under Gregory, South Dakota State posted seven winning seasons and an overall record of 55-50-3. Gregory resurfaced on the sidelines with the Tiger-Cats, coaching them from 1991 to 1994. He assumed control of an 0-8 team in 1991 and went 3-7 the rest of the way. Overall, he was 21-31 in Hamilton, which he guided to two East Division finals.Article content
