San Diego State's desire to get more production from its offense involves greater emphasis on its tight ends, less ground-and-pound with running game

Rock bottom came in a place famous for potatoes — fields and fields of them — on a football field the locals fondly call The Blue.

SDSU has turned to a favorite son, all-time passing leader Ryan Lindley, as the team’s new offensive coordinator following the offseason retirement of associate head coach and offensive coordinator Jeff Horton.Lindley’s primary task is restoring life to an offense than ranked 108th in the nation last season with 21.5 points a game. If he can re-emhpasize the forward pass in the attack, so much the better.

Don Coryell’s teams began airing it out in the mid-1960s. By the end of the decade, the Aztecs were regularly leading the nation in passing yards and/or touchdowns with guys like Dennis Shaw , Brian Sipe , Jesse Freitas , Craig Kimball and Craig Penrose chucking the ball. Not that San Diego State abandoned the pass altogether in the final two decades of the last century and the first decade of this one. It’s just that when they passed, the Aztecs often lost. They had just seven winning seasons and three bowl appearances from 1983-2009.The blueprint for such success under head coaches Brady Hoke and Rocky Long has been outstanding defensive teams supported by run-oriented offenses that control the clock and limit turnovers.

“That play call was set up by some run play,” he said, “or some play in the first quarter that we put out in the third quarter with its complement, or its curveball off of it. Lindley spent four years in the NFL with four teams, making a cameo on the Chargers’ practice squad in 2014. His professional career concluded in 2017 in Canada with Ottawa, playing for the aptly-nicknamed Redblacks.

Hoke said Lindley was a logical choice for OC job following Horton’s offseason departure, pointing to a relationship that began during Hoke’s first stint as SDSU’s coach.“Then being with him when he came back last year,” said Hoke, impressed with “how he handles quarterbacks, how he handles himself within the whole offense. He’s done a great job, and the kids respect him.”

Lindley got a first-hand look at “12” when he was offensive analyst for the Utes. The Utes use their tight ends to great success. In last season’s 35-7 home win over the Aztecs, Utah tight ends Brant Kuithe and Dalton Kincaid combined for eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.Lindley has spoken frequently about featuring the tight ends more, “like Utah.”
