A grand E. North Broadway home that for years housed wardens of the Ohio Penitentiary has been listed for nearly $1 million.
Built in 1884 in a Queen Anne style, the three-story home bears many marks of its era including extensive wood trim , glass kitchen cabinets, six fireplaces, double entrance doors, and stained and leaded glass.
After housing a string of families, the home was purchased by the state of Ohio in 1951 to serve as a residence for wardens of the Ohio Penitentiary. The last warden to occupy the home, Harold Cardwell, moved out in 1972. The vacant home, which sits, deteriorated for a few years before the state sold it in a 1976 auction for $50,000.
Subsequent owners restored and updated the home, which has been featured on the Clintonville Home Tour. Lari Madosky Shaw, with Coldwell Banker,The home includes six bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths in its 4,350 square feet. The first floor features a dining room, parlor, study, office and eat-in kitchen with island. Bedrooms are upstairs, including one on the finished third floor.
