A former leader of Cumbria County Council has died. Eddie Martin retired last year at the age of 72 and was an active member in his village up until his death.
He was part of the parish council for 36 years and the Crosscanonby Village Hall committee. The work for his village saw the hall renovated with a small public library attached.Cllr Hilary Carrick, Leader of the Conservative group on Westmorland and Furness Council, led the tributes. She said: “I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Eddie Martin’s death.
“Eddie was an amazing orator, a prolific letter writer and an inspirational Leader of Cumbria County Council. He was always impatient to bring about improvements that would benefit the residents of Cumbria and he will be fondly remembered by everyone who worked with him.Mike Johnson, Leader of the Conservative Group at Cumberland Council was saddened to hear of the passing of Eddie who was the much-respected Leader of Cumbria County Council.
He said: "Eddie was a Councillor who will be remembered by those he worked with for his kindness and compassion. He worked tirelessly to ensure the residents of Cumbria received the best possible service from Members and Officers alike. Our sincere condolences are sent to his family and friends and this sad time."
