The Leeds United defender came through the youth set-up at Arsenal but forged a career in the Football League
Forgotten Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong claims Luke Ayling was the most technically gifted player in plethora of talent that came through the academy at the Emirates. Now retired, Frimpong, played a handful of times for the Arsenal first-team and came through the academy set-up with Ayling but the defender was unable to repeat the feat of his his teammate.
Ayling came through an age group with the likes of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Sanchez Watt and Jack Wilshere. The latter of the trio became an Arsenal fan favourite but injuries plagued his career and stopped him from becoming one of the best midfielders in the world. Frimpong claims Leeds United defender, Ayling, was the best of his group, but lacked the pace the break into the first-team. Frimpong told Arsenal’s YouTube channel: “Coquelin was good and he came later on. At the start Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Jack Wilshere, Sanchez Watt, Luke Ayling.
"Luke was very good, but Luke was very slow right. Technically he was the best, for a defender he was very good."Ayling joined Yeovil Town on an initial one month loan deal before agreeing a permanent move at the end of the 2009-10 season. The right-back would make 184 appearances for the Glovers on their route to the Championship, before leaving to join Bristol City in 2014.
The former Gunners defender spent just over two season's at City before joining Leeds United in 2016-17 where he's been a regular ever since. Ayling went from strength to strength under Marcelo Bielsa and was part of the Whites side that won the Championship title and spent three seasons in the Premier League.
