Rep. Michael McCaul , the chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Kevin McCarthy being removed from the speakership is “bad for Ukraine” and for America’s image abroad.

“Kevin supports Ukraine, I’m not sure where the next speaker will be,” he said. In a major setback for pro-Ukraine lawmakers, Congress didn’t include any Ukraine aid in a short-term spending bill that passed Saturday, as the House and Senate raced to avert a partial government shutdown on Oct. 1. McCaul said McCarthy was trying to negotiate a deal that would combine border security measures with Ukraine aid. “That’s all on hold now,” he said. “It’s a bad day for Ukraine, it’s a bad day for America,” he said. “And it’s just going to embolden our adversaries like China, who already think democracy is dysfunctional.”This copy is for your personal, non-commercial use only.
