The Oregon Trail Generation was a computer game designed to teach kids history, but for some, it was the first video game that helped form long-lasting relationships.
Lex and I spent untold hours that summer staring into the green-black screen of an Apple II, venturing from Independence to the Pacific Northwest along the Oregon Trail. It would be years before we learned about Manifest Destiny, about Sooners and the Great Plains and Little Bighorn, about stolen lands and genocide and blankets laced with smallpox. Back then, the long journey westward was just a means of occupying our time after the sun went down.
During that summer, on two hard oak chairs borrowed from our parents’ dining room, I was closer to my sister than I had ever been before—or perhaps since. Growing up, we were always close. But beyond being the children of our parents, my sister and I soon had little in common. Geography played its part. She went to a leafy university outside of Philadelphia. By the time I got to the same city for college, she had moved on to medical school in New York.

Jury finds electric utility PacifiCorp liable in devastating Oregon wildfires; company to appealA jury in Oregon has found electric utility PacifiCorp responsible for causing devastating fires during Labor Day 2020 in a civil lawsuit. The jury awarded millions of dollars each to 17 homeowners who sued PacifiCorp a month after the fires, with most receiving $4.5 million and others $3 million for emotional distress. The jury also applied its liability finding to a larger class including the owners of nearly 2,500 properties damaged in the fires, which could push the price tag over $1 billion. Those damages will be determined later. PacifiCorp said it will appeal. The Portland utility is one of several owned by billionaire Warren Buffett’s Omaha, Nebraska-based investment conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway.
