Colorado’s running back room is loaded with talent this season. The Buffaloes appear to be in good shape for the future, too.
On Monday, highly regarded prospect Micah Welch from Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, Ga., verbally committed to the Buffs. Rated a three-star prospect, Welch is ranked as the No. 40 running back recruit in the nation for the 2024 class.
As a junior in 2022 at Baldwin, the 5-foot-9, 195-pound Welch rushed for 1,373 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also adding a receiving touchdown and a kickoff return for a score. He was named the Region 2-AAAA offensive player of the year. Welch averaged 6.1 yards per carry this past season and ran the ball 20.5 times per game. As a sophomore in 2021, Welch rushed for 988 yards and 19 touchdowns, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. He gained 503 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman.
Welch visited CU this past weekend and chose the Buffs over, among others, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina State, Oregon, Tennessee and West Virginia. This offseason, the Buffs have added transfer running backs Kavosiey Smoke , Sy’veon Wilkerson and Alton McCaskill , along with true freshman Dylan Edwards. They also return Anthony Hankerson.
