A D.C. pilot program gives Medicaid patients weekly $20 vouchers for fresh produce.

Adrienne Dove, left, and her mother, Joanne Dove, shop for produce in May at a Giant store in Southeast Washington. Dove received a $20 produce coupon from her health-care clinic, where she goes to get treatment for hypertension. The produce vouchers are part of the District’s foray into the “food as medicine” movement. By Fenit Nirappil Fenit Nirappil Reporter covering D.C.

The goal, backed by some research, is to improve health and reduce costs by subsidizing fresh produce such as broccoli and grapefruit in addition to insulin and beta blockers. Council member Mary M. Cheh is urging lawmakers to increase the sales tax on sweetened beverages by 1 percent to create a permanent revenue source for the Produce Rx initiative, among other programs. As she shops, Adrienne Dove keeps track of her total bill with a calculator on her phone. Dove, 43, found out about the program while at a Community of Hope health clinic for a check on the state of her hypertension and anemia.

In-house nutritionist Jillian Griffith teaches a class on healthy eating at Giant in April. The wellness center is part of an initiative to prescribe produce to Medicaid patients in an attempt to improve health and reduce care costs. Nguyen, the San Francisco health official, said that proponents of food as medicine are still trying to figure out the best way to set up such programs.

Allison Hess, a Geisinger executive, said the Fresh Food Farmacy costs about $3,500 per family annually, and drops in blood sugar would result in greater savings from less medication. “Most people are going to come to the grocery store, while farmers markets and pop-ups are at certain places at certain times of year,” said Lavdena Adams Orr, the chief medical officer at AmeriHealth Caritas.Ciera Price, left, takes a photo of Giant nutritionist Jillian Griffith during their consultation. Ciera Price of Southeast Washington was distraught when she was diagnosed this winter with hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol.
