SALT LAKE CITY — Less than three months after it kicked off in earnest, the race for the Republican Party's nomination to fillPolling places in Utah closed at 8 p.m. and the results are rolling in. This story will be updated as county clerks release the latest ballot tabulations.
Becky Edwards took an early lead over Celeste Maloy and Bruce Hough after preliminary results were posted from Salt Lake, Davis and Tooele counties, but Maloy — who is from Cedar City — has gained ground throughout the night and has performed well in rural counties.Here are the latest vote shares, updated at 9:20 p.m.
A loud cheer erupted from Edwards supporters when the first results were displayed at a campaign watch party in Salt Lake City; the mood in the room was nervous and optimistic. At a watch party in West Valley City, Hough said he felt confident and excited with the early results, and was asked if he would have done anything differently in the campaign.As of 4 p.m., turnout for the 2nd District race was at 33.1%, according to Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, the state's top election official. Turnout was highest in Piute , Garfield and Wayne Counties. More than 43% of voters in Davis County had turned out, along with nearly 34% in Salt Lake County.
Each of the three candidates has a track record of working with the party, and each has appealed to a different segment of the Republican electorate.
