, a reassuring finding as experts warn more people are likely to catch both as restrictions lift and flu bounces back after largely disappearing during pandemic lockdowns.Influenza A viruses interfere with the ability of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, to replicate, according to peer reviewed research based on lab and animal studies.

The researchers found that infection with influenza A—one of four main flu strains, a main culprit of seasonal flu and the only influenza virusesto cause flu pandemics—suppressed a subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection, hampering virus replication in the lungs for more than a week after the flu infection had been cleared.

It’s not clear whether this altered the course of the disease or its severity, the researchers said, or whether animals infected with both viruses shed SARS-CoV-2 for longer. Conversely, the researchers found that a Covid infection did not change the trajectory or severity of an influenza A infection, regardless of timing. With both viruses circulating and most pandemic restrictions having been dropped, the researchers said it is likely that more people will get infected with both at once.
