Vaccines against flu and COVID-19 are keeping vaccinated people from being hospitalized, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, director of the Ohio Department of Health, said in a media briefing Wednesday. In this image, a mother holds her 8-month-old daughter as a nurse administers the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at a vaccine clinic in New Jersey in November.

Hand washing and wearing masks indoors can help stop the spread of these viruses, said Dr. Joe Gastaldo, medical director of infectious diseases for OhioHealth, who participated in the media briefing. RSV came roaring into Greater Cleveland at the end of September, filling area hospitals with sick children.in their emergency department in late October, compared with the previous month. While the flu season started early and took off rapidly, recently there has been a drop in flu-related hospitalizations in Ohio and nationally, Vanderhoff said.Flu activity is high

The number of Ohioans getting a flu shot this season is on par with numbers in average pre-pandemic years, which is a good sign, Vanderhoff said. The flu season can stretch into March or April, so there’s time to get the influenza vaccine.COVID-19 cases have increased in Ohio in recent weeks, but COVID-19 vaccines are protective against the new subvariants.

There are many situations where people should decide to wear masks indoors in public. They should follow the mask-wearing recommendations on the county-by county map, produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showing COVID-19 spread.
