In a busy pre-match conference with the media, Rohan Smith talked recruitment, retention and injuries.
To be honest, that much was evident in the aftermath of the club's victory over Hull FC last week. The carefully-worded statement and Smith's non-commital stance on the centre's long-term future told you all you needed to know.
"That's in Gary's hands at the moment," Smith said. "Gary is sure to update me when there are some updates." When asked if he'd ruled the Papua New Guinea international out of his plans, he added: "I'm not going to speculate about possible scenarios or what may or may not happen. That's in the hands of Gary and Nene's management team. I'll get an update on the best outcome for the club and Nene and his young family.
The Rhinos halfback is leaving the club at the end of the season to return to the NRL with Wests Tigers. However, his time on a UK field may have already been cut short after Rohan Smith confirmed he would be undergoing a 28-day return-to-play protocol after suffering a concussion in training last week.
"He had a couple of bumps this year and given his age and history, he had a severe one at the back end of last year as well, so the specialist has recommended a 28-day return-to-play process, which will be close to the back end of the season there. His health and longevity is to be considered there." The Dolphins centre has been linked with a move to the Rhinos, with talk fuelled by the player's agent suggesting Leeds and Catalans had shown interest in signing him.
