Jeff Traylor is beginning his fourth year as UTSA’s head coach as the Roadrunners begin spring practice on Monday.From the time Jeff Traylor was hired at UTSA in December 2019, he promised to spend his first three years at a full sprint, whether that meant working on the program internally or accepting every speaking engagement he could to help build the Roadrunners brand.
Though his three-year promise has expired, Traylor said he’s “been running full speed, and still running.” A few players who suffered long-term injuries last year will participate in the spring but not be rushed back to full speed, Traylor said, including safety Rashad Wisdom, defensive tackle Brandon Matterson and offensive tackles Makai Hart and Demetris Allen.
“I’m really trying to get them to take a slow approach to this deal, help me coach this team, get these young guys ready,” Traylor said. “Let’s make it so these old guys are just dying to play next year.” Traylor said the competition is open to every player on the roster at this early stage of the process, including players trying their hand at new roles.
“Change is just the norm for this profession now, so that’s why we have a strong belief in promoting guys within,” Traylor said. “That’s been pretty seamless, and I would expect everything to run around here like it always runs, which will be a good thing.”
