On Wednesday, the newly appointed Tempe chief of police opened up about his job approach, the importance of inclusion, and the unhoused issue.

Tempe's new police chief says he is ready to slow down and listen to the needs of the city's people, their stakeholders, and the Tempe Police Department.Kenneth McCoy was announced as the new Tempe chief of police by City Manager Andrew Ching

He left amid a political storm over how he planned to roll out body cameras and to release footage from those cameras after fatal police shootings, published news accounts said.McCoy was among four finalistsOn Wednesday, McCoy opened up about how he sees himself approaching this new challenge. He spoke about how his experience at his current job as Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion officer at a healthcare organization will apply to the Tempe Police Department.

The police department is not a single solution, he said, but he hopes to serve as a partner to the community leaders and stakeholders who have a big hand in combating that issue. And he's said he's ready to be the leader to bring all those partners together. Since February 2022, McCoy has promoted"culturally component, patient-centered care" and diversity and inclusion within Providence Alaska, the healthcare company where he works. He has also been in charge of integrating"diversity and inclusion with health initiatives that improve health status, access and awareness" to communities, the company's website states.

Outside of building relationships, a police officer's job is to enforce the law. Tempe's crime rate has been higher than that of surrounding cities such as Mesa and Phoenix. McCoy's plan is to take a holistic approach and use different types of partnerships and community policing to combat criminal activity in the city.

The ACLU at the time stated that the whole process was seemingly intervened by the administration of Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson.Less than six months after serving as chief, McCoy abruptly announced his retirement"after much reflection and thoughtful consideration," in an online statement. At the time, he did not give a reason but later said that politics had played a role.
