The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed the world’s first human death from a type of bird flu in China.
China has recorded the world’s first human death from a type of bird flu, the World Health Organisation has said.
A woman from the southern province of Guangdong was the third person known to have been infected with the H3N8 subtype of avian influenza. The 56-year-old fell ill on February 22, was hospitalised for severe pneumonia on March 3 and died almost two weeks later, on March 16.A worker carries chickens at a market The Guangdong Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reported the third infection late last month but did not provide details of the woman’s death.Samples collected from a wet market visited by the woman before she became ill were positive for influenza A, suggesting this may have been the source of infection.
