As preposterous as it sounds, could the man who won more games than anyone in league history have made it as a coach in New York?He’s probably right, and in more ways than he lets on. The Big Apple boasts more restaurants than any city in the country, but it also contains the most media members, and it’s not hard to imagine which would have been worse for his blood pressure.
Think back to how their breakthrough 1999 season with the Spurs began. Popovich, in his second full season as head coach, with a team that expected to contend, started the year 6-8. In what is now a San Antonio legend, he was a day from getting fired, before a victory over the Rockets gave him a reprieve.Almost certainly not, and the history of both franchises have been littered with plenty of examples proving that point.
Here, though, is the catch — the one that makes the thought of Popovich succeeding in New York not so preposterous after all. Thirteen years ago, when a Spurs point guard named Jacque Vaughn realized his playing days were over, he was persuaded by Popovich to hang around the coaching staff for a year to, in Vaughn’s words, “shadow, follow, be around and figure it out along the way.”
