The true-crime series focuses on the sensational 1985 rape and murder of a Beatrice, Nebraska, grandmother
Nanfu Wang speaks at the Independent Lens’s PBS Winter 2020 TCA Press Tour at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, in Pasadena, Calif. That’s the question that haunts “Mind Over Murder,” HBO’s six-part true-crime series that begins June 20.
“It was 2017. After I made my first film, ‘Hooligan Sparrow,” Wang, 36, recalled, “I showed the finished film to the main subject — and realized that some of her memories were not true.”“I became fascinated by how malleable our memory is. Memory,” Wang said, “is so plastic in a way. Yet so fundamental to our individual identity. I believe any one of us could have false memory.”
Five of the six had confessed to being in that small apartment as the homicide was committed. But in 2009, DNA tests proved that none of the Beatrice Six, who had been in prison for close to 19 years, were ever at the scene.
