A federal judge has ordered Arizona's prison system to improve how it administers health care and detains people
The permanent injunction contains much of the same language as her. Silver gave the plaintiffs and defendants time to review an extensive metric for improving health care and conditions of confinement in Arizona prisons before issuing the final version Friday.
The mandated staffing increases, building upgrades, studies, and expert monitoring process must all be paid for by the Department of Corrections, which is funded by taxpayers at a cost of more $1.5 billion annually. The judge also ordered the state to"repair or replace essential equipment or structures in cells found in disrepair."
The department will also have more time to implement treatment programs for drug addiction and Hepatitis C. "We hope and we believe that it's a major step toward healthier and safer prisons, for incarcerated people and for the people who work in them as well," Fathi said.
