Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado and two other Democrats introduced a bill Tuesday that would offer millions of dollars in grants for personal and community air filters.
would set aside $30 million between 2024 and 2026 for grants to expand local programs that offer free air filter units to homes and that establish clean air centers in communities suffering from wildfire smoke.
“Coloradans are all too familiar with the wildfire smoke that engulfed communities across the East Coast last week – it’s a reality that we have long dealt with in our state and across the West,” Bennet said in a statement. Wildfire danger – and therefore smoke issues – are also becoming far more prevalent as climate change ushers in a hotter and drier future, Bennet added.
Wildfire smoke has lingered over Denver so often in recent years that the city’s air quality consistentlyIf enacted, the bill would provide grants to local programs that offer at least 1,000 free air filtration units and one replacement filter to low-income homes with people vulnerable to wildfire smoke; provide educational materials to ensure effective filter use; and establish at least one public clean air center.
U.S. Sens. Jeff Merkley and Scott Peters, Democrats of Oregon and California, respectively, introduced the bill alongside Bennet. The measure also has Democratic backing in the House, including from Colorado Reps. Yadira Caraveo, Joe Neguse and Brittany Pettersen.
