The FDA has announced that it will be ending blood donation restrictions that have discriminated against gay and bisexual men since 1985.

, citing the higher prevalence of HIV infections in the gay community during that time, despite the fact that the disease can be transferred regardless of gender or sexual orientation. The policy was changed in 2015, allowing gay and bisexual men to give blood if they abstained from sex for a full year. In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, that time period was shortened to three months.
The proposal announced this week will use “risk-based questions to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted HIV,” rather than assuming the level of risk based on a person’s gender or sexual orientation,“Maintaining a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products in the U.S. is paramount for the FDA, and this proposal for an individual risk assessment, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, will enable us to continue using the best science to do so,” FDA Commissioner Robert M.
