Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has the opportunity to allow some of his fringe players to drop down to pick up game time in the U21s
Michael Skubala’s Leeds United Under-21s are battling on three fronts this season and games are coming thick and fast. The young Whites are competing in the reformatted Premier League 2, of course, but they’ve also entered the Premier League Cup and the Premier League International Cup, meaning the U21s are looking at a busy schedule of games.
But, he has allowed Darko Gyabi and Lewis Bate to drop down on what seems like a permanent basis to get the game time they so desperately need at this point in their careers, while Leo Hjelde and Kristoffer Klaesson have also got minutes in the youth set up with both men featuring against Nice.
The same can be said for Hjelde, who, as mentioned above, did get some minutes at Elland Road against Nice’s B team, but doesn’t seem to be a part of Farke’s plans at present. The Norwegian actually started the season in the first-team starting XI, but his struggles resulted in him being hooked at half-time against Cardiff City and against Shrewsbury Town in the Carabao Cup.
Mateo Joseph will surely be eyeing a return to the U21s as a way of getting some minutes under his belt, too. The England U20 international hasn’t played at any level for Leeds this season and with first-team chances appearing few and far between at present, he could do with a run out.
