“They placed themselves in a situation where they used deadly force, which was not reasonable given all the circumstances as we now understand them,” said SAPD Chief William McManus of the officers arrested in the death of Melissa Perez.
A still from body camera video shows a San Antonio police officer aiming his weapon during a shooting that left 46-year-old Melissa Perez dead Friday. The City of San Antonio launched a $1.7 million pilot program last year designed to ensure mental health-related calls do not needlessly result in arrest or worse, use of deadly force.
“They placed themselves in a situation where they used deadly force, which was not reasonable given all the circumstances as we now understand them,” McManus said. Through a spokeswoman, McManus declined to respond to questions about what specific policies and procedures the police officers failed to follow during the incident as well as questions about what de-escalation training officers received. The District Attorney’s office said it could not comment on the facts of the case because it is being actively investigated.
