For 16 years, people who lived at a Grand Prairie apartment complex found a dependable, friendly and hardworking presence in their maintenance man, Cesar Montelongo.
The shooter, who police have not identified, has not been arrested while detectives examine his claims of self defense. Police have released few details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting to the public or Montelongo’s relatives.
Montelongo raised a religious family who would be willing to forgive the man who killed him, his son said. But his family still believes the gunman needs to be held accountable to some extent. The shooter, believing his apartment was being burglarized, shot Montelongo through a window, Grand Prairie police spokesman Mark Beseda said. The shooter remained at his apartment after the shooting and cooperated with detectives.
But in other cases, people who have shot through doors or windows have been charged with crimes including aggravated assault because their actions were not viewed as reasonable, Shook said.
