UC Berkeley estimated that skeletal remains from at least 95 people of potentially Native American ancestry were used by anthropologist Tim White, according to a ProPublica report.

But that's not the perspective of repatriation groups, who say much more must be done to identify the remains of their ancestors and that part of the reason it's so difficult to identify the origins of certain remains is that they were handled so callously by universities like UC Berkeley.

Last month, in response to questions from SFGATE about UC Berkeley's having the largest collection of unrepatriated Native American remains in the United States, a university spokesperson said it is UC Berkeley's hope to transfer all eligible remains to tribes within a decade.
