A public protest is planned and councillors are calling for an emergency meeting following the decision to shut 39 swimming pools, sport and leisure facilities and community spaces
More than 21,000 North Lanarkshire residents have now signed a raft of online petitions protesting against the closure of 39 leisure centres, libraries and community spaces – including landmark spaces such as the John Smith pool, Aquatec, Shotts leisure centre and Sir Matt Busby complex.
Both the SNP and Progressive Change North Lanarkshire groups opposed the closures and called for the decision to be delayed for public consultation and to be decided by the full council as part of next year’s annual budget. He said: “I am utterly disgusted at the decision by a small group of to close 39 community facilities across the area – many of these have received significant investment of our money and are vital to our community.”
“People across Airdrie & Shotts will be appalled by this unnecessary and damaging decision; the facilities are very well used, however North Lanarkshire won’t know the full extent of that usage as it is not properly monitored. It is particularly galling that this decision was taken with no public consultation and with constituents only getting one week’s notice of this plan.”
“To take much-used and essential facilities from people who have to live with multiple deprivations will have a significant effect on mental and physical health, in turn putting pressures on other resources such as GPs, social services and police.”
