A dramatic decline in penguin populations is putting at risk the Antarctic Ocean’s ability to support wildlife and absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide, scientists have found.
They also appear to transfer it between iron-rich and iron-poor parts of the ocean as they migrate along with the edge ofA lack of iron is a crucial limiting factor for plankton growth, especially in an area of the Southern Ocean where the Antarctic Circumpolar Current flows. Prof Mark Moore, a professor of ocean biogeochemistry at the University of Southampton, who was not involved in the study, toldthat the penguins “act as a kind of reservoir [for iron] and they move it around” to iron-deprived areas, stimulating new plankton growth.The plankton, which grow through photosynthesis, also absorb carbon dioxide. When they are eaten or die, this carbon sinks to the seafloor, where it settles and remains.
