On Monday, March 28, the Fairbanks City Council voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Scott Raygor as the city’s new fire chief.
The new chief first came to Fairbanks in 1995 and has been serving with the Fairbanks Fire Department ever since. “It’s just been a great community to start living in and then raising our kids,” he said, adding “It was supposed to be a 3-months’ job, so it’s a 3-month job that lasted 27 years.”
But Raygor also pointed out that this new job is completely different. “Battalion Chief... you’re crew supervisor. You’re still going on calls. You go out and you run a fire scene, and stuff like that. The Fire Chief is all administrative, budgets, managing people, hiring people, personnel issues.” Raygor said he has plans for the Fairbanks Fire Department. Right now, the department is having staffing issues. “So we can’t provide full services to the amount of emergency calls that come in. Some days we have health calls where we have to wait, or the citizens have to wait for an ambulance to show up.”
