Formula One will debut a revised sprint race weekend format at this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, adding a new “Sprint Shootout” qualifying session. LukeSmithF1 details the changes:
F1’s sprint races have largely been considered a success since debuting in 2021, ensuring there is a competitive session each day at the track. Under the previous format, qualifying moved to Friday, setting the grid for the sprint race on Saturday that awarded eight points to the winner, seven to second, and so on down to one point for eighth. The result of the sprint race also formed the final starting grid for the main grand prix Sunday.
The starting order for the sprint race will be set by a “Sprint Shootout” qualifying session that takes place on Saturday when final practice would normally happen. Although “Sprint Shootout” will follow the regular Q1/Q2/Q3 qualifying format, there will be some adjustments. Each session will be shorter than in normal qualifying: SQ1 will last 12 minutes; SQ2 will last 10 minutes; SQ3 will be eight minutes. The limited time in SQ3 should create more jeopardy and, on longer tracks such as Baku, leave drivers with enough time for only one timed lap.
Drivers will also be restricted to using medium tires in both SQ1 and SQ2 and must then use soft tires — the optimum tire for qualifying — in SQ3.
