Tapped out of tech news last week? These were the highlights.
A ransomware attack is a bummer for any local government. For the city of Oakland, it’s a nightmare – one that’s been going on for more than two months now.
• Expect delays in public services, the city announced. Police were also impacted. “Cops came to work and realized their field-based reporting system in the cars wasn't working,” Oakland Police Officers’ Association President Barry Donelan told The Examiner. That meant no easy access to the data system for crime reports and investigations.
• Ransomware attacks against government or military organizations have become more common. In 2023, on average, 1 out of 49 government or military organizations in the U.S. suffered a ransomware attack, according SecureWorks. • But the Oakland police union said city officials didn’t immediately tell them that their personal information had been stolen. The union filed a legal complaint on March 30. A spokesperson said the City of Oakland had no comment.
