Piran Ditta Khan is charged with killing PC Sharon Beshenivsky
A former Scots businessman has appeared in court over the murder of an English police officer almost two decades ago. Piran Ditta Khan is charged with the killing of PC Sharon Beshenivsky, who was allegedly fatally shot while responding to a robbery at Universal Travel in Bradford on November 18, 2005.
Khan was arrested in Pakistan three years ago, following a joint operation between the UK's National Crime Agency and Pakistani authorities. Open source articles show that he had business interests in Aberdeen, including several Indian restaurants. The judge did not ask the defendant to enter a plea to any of the alleged offences and he only spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and to tell the court he was having some trouble hearing.
The firearms charges relate to his alleged possession of a Mac 10 sub-machine gun and a 9mm pistol, with all the alleged offences said to havie taken place on the same day. District Judge John Zani remanded Khan back into custody and no bail application was made. He is set to appears before the Old Bailey on Monday.
