Former Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino has spoken out to give his take on the ongoing Italian investigation into alleged illegal betting activity that has seen Juventus midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo receive a seven-month suspension. Newcastle United have confirmed that midfielder Sandro Tonali is under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and the Italian football federation, and Cellino has moved to back the former AC Milan star.
“I can bet my soul he is a clean guy with principles,” Cellino told the Telegraph. “All my players in Brescia love him. The first time he had money he bought a car for his father, a carpenter. His mum was a nurse and he bought her a house. Dishonest? Come on. They don’t realise what they are doing to this boy. If Tonali does that, how many others? I don’t want to know.
Cellino took over at Elland Road in 2014 and oversaw a somewhat chaotic period at Leeds United before Andrea Radrizzani completed a full buy-out in the summer of 2017. He is now the current owner of Serie B side Brescia. It's been more of the same this season for Phillips, with the door to first-team minutes not even opening after fellow midfielder Rodri's three-match suspension last month. Despite this lack of game time at club level, England boss Gareth Southgate trusted the Leeds -born star in the Three Lions' crucial Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy on Tuesday evening.
