RSPB's resident wildlife advisor gives the lowdown on birding this month
As well as these changes, around half of our birds are migratory and the birds who arrived in early spring to breed are getting ready to leave soon. Some really early birds like cuckoos have already gone, but those more familiar faces found in our neighbourhoods, such as swallows and house martins, are certainly preparing for their long flights south.Despite the bounty of berries, seeds and fruit around, it’s still a good idea to put out some food for birds.
A source of fresh water provides a drink for birds but also somewhere to bathe which is essential for birds to keep their feathers clean. It’s especially appreciated on hot days. You can make a garden more bird-friendly with your planting – one with plenty of shrubs, hedging and trees is always welcoming for birds, providing some shade as well as a food source with their berries and fruits.
Being a little less tidy in the garden also helps. Leaving the lawn a bit longer attracts insects and gives birds such as starlings and blackbirds cover as they feed, whilst some seedheads are great for birds likeWhilst we know that birds go quiet over this month, we are very concerned about the number of birds disappearing from our skies for good each year. Since the 70s, we’ve lost 38 million birds and with added challenges from things such as avian flu, these declines are worsening.
