HISD juniors are taking the SAT today. Here are the next steps to apply for college.
Applying to four-year universities can be a daunting process for a family.
It’s important to meet with your high school’s college counselor so they can help nail down specific application details for the colleges and universities you’re considering, since many places carry different deadlines and material requirements. Even more important is knowing the tuition at each college, what grants and loans you might qualify for, and what you can afford. While this isn’t meant to be an all-inclusive guide, it’s a good starting point to familiarize your family with the process.
The schools you’re applying to might be test-optional, however, meaning it won’t be held against you if you don’t submit a score. If that’s the case, discuss with your counselor whether the SAT or ACT is worth taking, and what test scores might be worth including in your applications.Take AP exams, if applicable. These can also be costly, at $97 each. Many college advisers recommend making campus visits in the summer after your junior year, if you haven’t done so already.
