Few songwriters as prolific as Elvis Costello have been equally voracious in recording cover songs. But Costello has only recorded two full-on covers albums. While 1981’swas a strong artistic statement, a full-on country album from an artist who was known for making new wave, 1995’ssuffers from a relative lack of identity.
His co-star, Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, sings most of the songs. It’s an eclectic mix of new Costello compositions, songs that had appeared on his other albums, and covers of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Tom Waits. Costello, leading the instrumental ensemble with Steve Nieve, only sings on a third of the 18 tracks, often only backing vocals.On Elvis Costello’s ninth album in eight years, he was burnt out and depleted.
