Sergeant David Smith's most recent fundraiser saw his Wrexham Police FC team take on Talking Toffees for Alder Hey
A Blues-loving police officer is dedicating his spare time to good causes through football - and has even received Hollywood A-list backing for his efforts.
Getting the backing of those Everton heroes was special for Sgt Smith - though it was not his club’s first celebrity endorsement after Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the US actors turned Wrexham FC owners, showcased their own support ahead of a similar match set up to support Wrexham Maelor hospital.
Sgt Smith had a Goodison Park season ticket before shift work prevented his regular attendance at Everton but still has family who go to every game - and is bringing up his children as Blues. In all, in just two years since Sgt Smith began the team, it has helped to raise £17,000 for good causes. A big chunk of that came from donations from Reynolds and McElhenney, who Sgt Smith approached for help in hope and was blown away by the response - which extended beyond messages of support and to donations totalling £10,000. He said: “I initially sent Ryan and Rob a message on Twitter asking if they would kindly support our charity match for the Wrexham Maelor Children’s Ward.
