Two acclaimed groups that focus on early music, the Newberry Consort and Haymarket Opera Company, are joining forces to present a mini-festival of music by 17th century female composers.
The Newberry Consort will present a program of music by 17th century composer Sophie Elisabeth on Sept. 24 at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Evanston.
Malamut said that she wanted to focus on 17th century female composers because, “They’ve been under-programed. And specifically Sophie Elisabeth has been virtually unheard of, as far as I’m aware, in recent history.” Malamut transcribed many manuscripts of the composer’s work and then selected pieces from that collection that would allow her to tell the story of Sophie Elisabeth’s life. She included pieces by some of the composer’s contemporaries in the program, including Heinrich Schutz and William Brade.“I think the music that we’re showcasing really reflects all the different elements,” Malamut said.
