Europe leverages Russian invasion of Ukraine to expedite its comprehensive transition to renewable energy that European leaders have been planning for many years, since the 1990’s. Energy Transitions Commission report coming week of March 1, 2022.

. For example, Germany approved $68 billion for climate and green infrastructure investment last December.

Many leaders acknowledge that Europe would be in a much better place today – especially in light of Russia’s attack on Ukraine on top of already high energy prices – if they had pivoted away from Russian gas years ago, but some European policymakers who have been on the fence reportedly needed the current crisis to be convinced to act now.

Italy is increasing corporate taxes on energy companies and Spain is approving a tax on utilities, Dixson explained, adding that some countries are putting policies in place to protect consumers from high electricity bills.... [+]European policymakers, including Dixson, admit that it will take time to build out the infrastructure for renewables, and that some gas will be needed in the transition, as well as nuclear.

Dixson insisted, “We just need systems thinkers. And we need to stop having these short term, knee jerk reactions to both geopolitics and how we actually transition towards low carbon energy. We cannot continue to function this way. We have to have put in place the right infrastructure. We need to think about what that looks like. We need to have the right capital flows. We need to have the right signals to the, both the public sector and the private sector in terms of investment.

The new European energy strategy and the Energy Transitions Commission recommendations next week will reveal how serious they are about speeding up this comprehensive transition.
