And I’m furious that the NRA began its annual convention just three days after this massacre, less than 300 miles away from Uvalde. The convention is just a few miles from Santa Fe where promises of action were made and denied to my community of 13,000 — minus the 10 who were killed at Santa Fe High School by a student who used his father’s guns.
There was only one way into the convention. Some protesters and counter-protesters were taunting each other. The situation illustrated what prevents us from getting things done and trying to find solutions. Abbott and Cruz promised changes to our school systems and more security. They said they would pass legislation to make sure this would not happen again. And yet, here we are with another community joining the list of tragedies like ours.
My daughter was nervous when she saw the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February 2018. She kept asking me, “What if this happens here?” I would tell her it wouldn’t and that things like that don’t happen in Texas. I repeated this to her at the inaugural March for Our Lives protest in Houston.
So when I see Cruz and others at the NRA convention reading off the same scripts, when they’ve done nothing for four years, I’m so angry. When he grandstands about stopping legislation that would take our guns away, I call BS. I’ve read the proposed legislation and none would take all our guns away.I believe gun owners should be obligated to act responsibly, which is how I was raised. NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre once said, “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.
