Jordan Poole's questionable three at the end of Warriors-Lakers Game 1 all started with a lazy jog, one ESPN analyst said.
Golden State Warriors guard Jordan Poole celebrates a basket in the first quarter against the Philadelphia 76ers at Chase Center on March 24, 2023, in San Francisco.were down just three points with 18 seconds left in Game 1 of their playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers.
How did things go so wrong for the Dubs? ESPN’s Tim Legler argued Wednesday morning that lazy legs were to blame. In a breakdown of the play on “Get Up,” Legler painstakingly ran through the entire sequence, starting with Curry rebounding a Lakers miss and dribbling up the floor. Right off the bat, Legler said, while Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson take off running, Poole and Draymond Green are dragging.
“Watch how they sort of jog up the floor,” Legler explained. “It sets up the entire thing. Because they don’t sprint, they end up behind the play.” With Green and Poole taking their time, Curry ends up just past the halfcourt line with four Lakers looming andThen comes the pair’s second sin: spacing. Green receives the pass from Curry at the logo, and Poole, rather than fill in the gap on the left wing, is standing too close to Draymond near the top of the court.
Legler also pointed out that Poole, a right-handed shooter, caught the pass from his right side, which makes it “very difficult to generate the kind of momentum you need to shoot a shot from that distance.” He didn’t address the fact that Poole shot it with 9.7 seconds left on the clock, though his co-host Mike Greenberg noted that “there’s so much time left you could get a quick two, right. Almost anything would’ve been better than that.
