The gate has faced months of issues

The Environment Agency says it has met its flood defence role and given other help surrounding a broken sea gate at a Lancaster port, where managers says hundreds of jobs are at risk because the gate cannot be lowered for ships.

Numerous businesses are based at Glasson Dock and nearby Glasson Marina. In addition, north-west road transport firms and others have trade linked to the port’s imports and exports. The Environment Agency has an interest in the Glasson Dock gate, which has two purposes. It allows access to Glasson’s inner dock and Glasson Marina beyond. But the gate was enhanced a few years ago and , when closed upright, forms part of the official Glasson flood alleviation scheme as a tidal flood defence.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said this week: “We acknowledge the local importance of the marina, a legal agreement between ourselves and Lancaster Port Commission governs maintenance, repair and renewal of the gate, with the EA contributing towards such costs. We have met this obligation and have also provided additional financial support towards maintenance of the gate, to help manage the risk of flooding to the community.
