The Dan Spencer actor spoke to the ECHO in an exclusive interview as he prepares to star in a pantomime
The soap actor is renowned for his role as Dan Spencer in the fictional Yorkshire village. The 53-year-old played Dan for 12 years before he bowed out in a bombshell story when his character was jailed for eight years.
He said: "I went in for eight episodes and I ended up doing 1,000. You learn your trade in a place like that." He added: "I've still got plenty of mates there and mates who aren't on the show anymore, who I'm still pally with. Even now, Bhasker Patel, who plays Rishi and left a few months before me. My phone pings at 2am and the wife knows it's him.
"Obviously it's going to be really hard work, but after doing soap and TV, which was a totally different beast, it's a whole different type of performance. On stage, especially with characters like this, it's got to be big and bold. It's going to be fun to be ridiculous for a bit." He said: "They're just always friendly here. Over the last 10 years, Liverpool has come on loads. It's just vibrant and everywhere is buzzing. It's a really great city."
